Windows Holographic, the version of Windows 10 that runs on Microsoft’s Hololens, is now available for companies who want to build mixed reality devices. The Windows Holographic platform includes the holographic shell and interaction model, perception APIs and Xbox Live services. Microsoft would like to see AR, VR and mixed reality devices communicate cross-platform. Interested parties are invited to WinHEC in Shenzen or Taipei November 1st-5th to learn more. Microsoft has been talking with ASUS, Intel, AMD, Qualcomm, HTC, Acer, CyberPowerPC, Dell, Falcon Northwest, HP, iBuyPower, Lenovo, MSI and "many others.”
Microsoft is selling 1,500 patents to Xiaomi along with some cross-licensing agreements. In addition, Xiaomi will install Office, Skype and other Microsoft software on phones and tablets. The patents include voice, multimedia and cloud computing.
AMD’s first Polaris-based graphics card, the Radeon RX480 promises VR-capable graphics and five teraflops of performance at $199 starting June 29. The RX 480 will have 36 compute units with GDDR5 a 256-bit memory bus and 256GB/s bandwidth. It will come in 4GB and 8 GB memory configs with DisplayPort 1.3/1.4 and HDMI 2.0b outputs supporting HDR video and AMD FreeSync. It has thermal design power of 150W.
And AMD announced its Zen desktop CPU, aka Summit Ridge, will have 8 cores, 16 threads and promises 40% more processing power than AMD’s Excavator chips. Manufacturers will get it in the third quarter. The desktop version will be followed with models for servers and eventually laptops.
AMD launched it’s 7th-gen A-series APUs, aka Bristol Ridge. The A9, A6 and E2 have a 15W Thermal design power with clock speeds of 1GHz or more. The higher-end FX, A12 and A10 come in 35W and 15W variants with base clock speeds of 3.5 GHz and 2.4 GHz respectively. AMD claims the A9s use 41% less power than its previous generation while watching 1080p video. 7th-gen APUs feature support for HDMI 2.0, PCIe 3.0, 4K H.265/HEVC, and VP9. HP Envy x360 convertible is already on the market with the FX chip.
The OnePlus 3 phone will go on sale at 12:30 Eastern Time June 14th, and OnePlus will not require invites in order to purchase one. Although there is a quirk. You must join a virtual reality experience to order right away. If you can’t join the event, orders will open to all on OnePlus.net at 3 PM Eastern the same day.
Google announced an update to its My Account service. A new Find your phone feature lets iOS and Android users locate, lock, call, secure an account or leave a callback number on the screen of a lost phone. Google offered most of these functions already for Android users but now it redirects iOS users to iCloud for the finding and locking options, while Google can call your phone or sign you out of Google services. You could already search Google for “find my phone” but you can soon add “I lost my phone” to the list. My Account can now be launched now from the Google app by saying show me my Google account and soon you can get to it just by searching your name on Google.
At the Code conference, Amazon CEO Jeff Bezos was asked why you can no longer buy the Apple TV or ChromeCast from Amazon. Bezos says he only wants to sell devices that support Amazon Prime Video and you can’t always get the video player on a device with, "acceptable business terms." When asked whether that meant Apple’s 30% cut of the profits, Bezos said that "private business discussions should stay private."
Samsung announced a 512GB PCIe solid state drive with non-volatile memory express or NVMe that’s half the size of a postage stamp. The snappily named PM971-NVMe uses a single ball grid array that packs 16 V-NAND flash chips DRAM and controller into 20mm x 16mm x 1.5 mm of space. Samsung claims it can reach read and write speeds of up to 1,500MB/s and 900MB/s respectively. Samsung will start providing the new SSDs to its customers this month worldwide.

Pick of the Day

Hello Tom

In a previous episode you mentioned not using the function keys with OS X because they don't do "what they are supposed to sometimes". I used to not use them for the same reason but then I came across FunctionFlip. It's a preference pane that allows you to individually switch each function key from it's shortcut key to its standard F key. It hasn't been updated since 2013 but does work with OS X 10.7 (Lion) and up. Sometimes it doesn't start in login and you manually have to start it, but this rarely happens and for me is a small price to pay to get my function keys back.

Tom,

Yesterday you were discussing tech things that were all the rage and then disappeared, you mentioned how netbooks were all the rage but have now disappeared. I would argue that the term netbook has been replaced by Chromebook. Same idea just came to fruition with a different name.

Tom,

Just to weigh in on the start of summer. You should know that boreal (northern hemisphere) summer starts June 1st as far as the weather enterprise is concerned. Most often you will find us making the seasonal breaks as JJA SON DJF MAM.

So do not be pressured by solstice/equinox lovers. It is just fine to say June 1st is the start of summer AND white pant wearing season.
