IDC issued its report for Q3 2016 smartwatch shipments Monday. A total of 2.7 million units were shipped worldwide down 51.6% from last year. Android Wear watches have been largely delayed until 2017 when Android Wear 2.0 will be released. Apple's New Watch went on sale Sep. 16 two weeks before the end of the quarter. Apple led the way with 41.3% market share falling 71.6% in number of shipments. Garmin rose shipments 324.2% to take a 20.5% marketshare good for second place on the backs of its ConnectIQ and fenix Chronos hiking watch. Samsung, Lenovo and Pebble rounded out the Top 5.
Monday Samsung announced customers in South Korea can trade in a Note 7 phone for a Galaxy S7. if they pay half the price of the S7 they can then exchange it for an S8 or Note 8 in 2017. This confirms Samsung's plans to keep the Note brand alive.
Saturday, AT&T agreed to acquire Time Warner for $85.4 billion. The deal is expected to close by the end of 2017. AT&T CEO Randall Stephenson said Monday that DirecTV's over the top service will launch in November at a "radically lower" price than competing services.
Apple released iOS 10.1 which fixes a malicious JPEG vulnerability AND will allow iPhone 7 Plus users to take photos in a special portrait mode. It combines data from the Plus's two cameras to calculate depth of field and deliver a background blur similar to mirrorless camera or dSLR for a bokeh-like effect. Apple also updated MacOS Sierra to automatically filter those 7 plus photos into a special album. WatchOS 3.1 has been updated to replay effects in the messages app. And tvOS got a stability update.
Starting Wednesday October 26th through November 1st, Pokémon Go will run its first in-game event. Halloween related monsters like Haunter and Zubat will show up more often and players will earn candy at a faster rate with double rewards for transferring Pokémon.
Russian site tjournal.ru shows screenshots of a live streaming function in Instagram stories. The report shows a big red button that reads “Go Insta” that leads to the live streaming. The report said a user discovered the live button while running the beta version of Instagram on Android.
