BuzzFeed reports that Laeta Kalogridis, who wrote Alita: Battle Angel and one of the upcoming Avatar sequels, is “close to finishing the first script of a potential KOTOR trilogy." Buzzfeed says Benioff and Weiss are writing their own scripts for their first Star Wars trilogy set for December 2022. So it would not seem that Benioff and Weiss are working on a Knights of the Old Republic Trilogy.... or are they?

What to Watch

Warner Brothers announced a live action adaptation of Akira, directed by Taika Waititi will come out on May 21, 2021. Katsuhiro Otomo’s 1982 manga was made into anime in 1988. Warner got the rights in 2002 with at least five different directors and ten different writers attached at one point or another to make it into a live action movie.
Kingkiller Chronicles prequel TV series writer John Rogers tweeted May 23 that he has completed the first draft of season 1. This is a Showtime series with Lin-Manuel Miranda doing music. It's scheduled to start filming this year for a 2020 release.
There's a trailer out for the Netflix production of Dark Crystal Age of Resistance, headed to Netflix August 30. It's a prequel following three young Gelflings—Rian (Taron Egerton), Deet (Nathalie Emmanuel), and Brea (Anya Taylor-Joy)—as they navigate a Thra still under the sinister clutches of the villainous Skeksis.
Paramount has delayed the release of Sonic the Hedgehog by three months to allow the visual effects team to redesign Sonic. Director Jeff Fowler promised the redesign earlier this month. Sonic will now come to theaters February 14, 2020.
A teaser trailer for Picard starring Patrick Stewart is out. It shows a vineyard and a woman asking Picard questions about why he left starfleet. She also mentions he “commanded the greatest rescue armada in history.” It's coming to CBS All Access in the US, Space in Canada and Prime Video internationally.
NBC News is the last of the US big three to bring out a free streaming news service. NBC News Now is streaming new content 3PM to 11 PM Eastern M-F. It will also go live during breaking news.
A trailer is out for Quentin Tarantino's Once Upon a Time in Hollywood starring Brad Pitt, Leonardo DiCaprio and Margot Robbie, set during the time of the Manson murder of Sharon Tate, played by Robbie. “Once Upon a Time in Hollywood” hits theaters July 26.
Netflix announced an animated series based on the Magic: The Gathering trading card game produced by Joe and Anthony Russo. The Russos will oversee the creation of the storyline and Henry Gilroy (Star Wars Rebels) and Jose Molina (The Tick) will write and run the shows.

Warner Brothers has cast Robert Pattinson as the new Batman. The Batman is scheduled to come to theaters June 25, 2021. Matt Reeves (Planet of the Apes last two films) is directing.
The Fire TV Recast DVR, which works with an antenna, has added the ability to record a show across multiple networks. This way you can record reruns showing on different networks without having multiple season passes and multiple versions of some episodes. To accommodate all those new episodes, Amazon also added the ability to use a USB hard drive to add additional storage.
Hulu says it has 82 million viewers on its 28 million customer accounts, so about 3 viewers per account. And 70% of those viewers are on the ad-supported version of Hulu you pay $5.99 a month for. Hulu also talked about targeted ads for bingeing behavior, like a food delivery service or the option for viewers who have just watched two consecutive episodes to choose to watch a 90-second ad in exchange for no ads during the rest of the next episode.
FuboTV announced a partnership with fantasy sports provider FanDuel to integrate betting data into Fubo's streaming platform. The feature is live right now in New Jersey with plans to roll out to other states eventually, where legal to do so. FanDuel’s betting data will become integrated into fuboTV — including under fuboTV-branded channels and FanDuel’s TVG channels, plus on content detail pages, in the programming guide and elsewhere. It expects other channels to allow it eventually. The deal is for data only no click-through to place bets.
For 79 long days in the spring of 1985 Coke had a new recipe called New Coke, until it relented and brought back classic Coke. New Coke eventually faded from the shelves. But it's back. The Duffer brothers wrote New Coke into the next season of Stranger Things which is set in 1985. Coca-Cola released a limited number of 12 oz. cans of New Coke using the original 1985 formula. Free cans of New Coke will be available in Upside-Down inspired vending machines in select cities starting in New York.
Rotten Tomatoes is changing how it calculates its audience scores. These are the ones with popcorn icons next to them NOT the rotten or fresh tomato scores based on critics reviews -- which is more famous. Recently, the company stopped user reviews from being posted until after the movie premiered. Now, when you leave a review it will ask you if you want to verify that you've seen the movie. If you are verified, your review will count toward the Audience Score. If not, you can still leave the review but it won't count toward the score. At the moment, you can only verify you bought a ticket through Rotten Tomatoes' sister site, Fandango. However, Rotten Tomatoes says it is working with AMC, Regal and Cinemark to verify purchases direct from the chains later this year.

I just wanted to share a Cord Killing success story from the past week. On Wednesday my coworker was telling me how well cutting the cord was going, the only issue he had was reliability with his Live TV streaming choice, DirecTV Now. He was having a lot of problems with the app and DVR. So we were discussing the other options out there. His main requirement, aside from better reliability was he had to have the Hallmark Channel, and apparently most services do not carry that. In going through all his options I asked him, what about PlayStation Vue? I bet you can guess his response…

“But I don’t have a PlayStation."

I immediately started laughing and told him he didn’t need one. He looked at me confused and said, "wow that is a really misleading name then."

Flash forward to today, I talked to him again and he is loving PlayStation Vue. He said the app is way more reliable, he likes the guide better and to top it off, they carry all 3 Hallmark Channels.

My coworker may not be a listener, but he is benefiting from the great work you guys do on this show.

Hey cord killers. First off, thanks for a great show. With the help of other podcasts I am now identified as an expert on daily tech news, science fiction and fantasy reading recommendations, and thanks to you, on the cord cutting revolution.

In listening, you have talked about how cord cutting gives us more control over what and when we watch, but does not really save us money. I want to point out another option, which I call “switchers” although I really hope you can come up with a much catchier name.

My wife and I watch 1-2 hours of programming per night, usually right after dinner. We usually choose one show and watch sequential episodes until the series is complete. We subscribe to Prime, for the shipping as well as the streaming service, and have always had Netflix. We have subscribed to Acorn for a month to catch more seasons of Murdoch Mysteries and cancelled it after those were completed. We have heard good things about a TV adaptation of one of my favorite books, called Game of Thrones, and now that this series is complete will likely subscribe to 1-2 months of HBO to watch it. We are considering cancelling Netflix during that time. Once we are done, we will choose another series and subscribe for as long as that series takes us to get through and cancel, just to pick another service the next month.

Your coverage has seemed to be of the mind that we need to subscribe to all services at all times that have something we will eventually want to watch. With on demand programming, binge watching, and a little planning, there is no reason we can’t watch what we want, when we want, on whatever device we please, and only pay for the service we are watching at that time. We can pay $20-$30 per month and see everything we want to.

Short version; in an episode that was heavily about human rights violations that China is doing, and some shady stuff that corporations are doing to try to be get China's favor, JoCo wrote a song that had essentially every censored, hot button, taboo in China subject (Tiananmen Square, Winnie the Pooh, etc), and in an ironic twist CBS censored it to stay in China's favor.

It's an interesting interview.
