Primary Target

Non-spoilery discussion of how Marvel pulled off a 22-movie run that culminated in a movie that broke almost every box office record.

How to Watch

Starting May 1 programming from its channels will show up on Viacom-owned Pluto TV.
Co-branded Flagship channels will have "curated" versions of BET, Comedy Central, MTV, Nick, Nick Jr., and Spike. In other words not the same stream shown on cable.
"Signature" channels CMT Westerns, Comedy Central Stand-Up, MTV Dating, MTV Guy Code, MTV Teen, Paramount Movie Channel, and Spike Outdoors
Pop-up channels will feature marathons, with the first one being a channel of all the episodes of The Hills ahead of the return of The Hills: New Beginnings coming June 24.
Awesomeness’ teen thriller “Light as a Feather” Season 2 will premiere on Hulu July 26, and Viacom announced that MTV’s “Wild ‘N Out” will launch a Twitch live-streaming channel this summer that will feature the show’s personalities playing video games.
And CNN is coming to Pluto TV (curated channel of clips as well) on April 30.
Also starting May 1 will be Paramount+ expanding from Europe into latin america.
It offers 150 movies, 2,000 TV shows from Viacom properties and titles like The Handmaid's Tale.
David Lynn, President & CEO of Viacom International Media Networks “By forging partnerships with the world’s leading operators and distributors we are able to bring Viacom’s premium content to new global audiences.
Finally CBS has called off its search fro a replacement for now-departed CEO Les Moonves, extending interim CEO Joe Ianniello for six months, boosting the speculation that Viacom and CBS are going to get back to talking about a merger.

What to Watch

Fox has given the green light to a half hour comedy called "What Just Happened??!" hosted by Fred Savage, premiering June 30. It's a fake after show for a fake SciFi series called “The Flare,” based on the fictional book “The Moon Is the Sun at Night” by fictional author TJ Whitford.
Nickelodeon green lit a Star Trek Animated series from Emmy-winning writers Kevin and Dan Hageman (Trollhunters, Ninjago) It follows a group of lawless teens who discover a derelict Starfleet ship and use it to search for adventure, meaning and salvation.
Netflix will not bring Santa Clarita Diet back from a fourth season. Co-star Timothy Olyphant said, "I loved working on this show. I’m going to continue coming in and doing scenes. If they don’t want to film it, that’s up to them.”
Why so many 3-season cancellations? Deadline says Netflix employs a “cost-plus” model, offering to pay upfront a show’s production costs plus a premium of 30%+ of the costs. The pacts include bump/bonuses after each season that are getting progressively bigger... they escalate after Season 3, especially for series owned by Netflix — sometimes from hundreds of thousands to millions of dollars — as the studio starts to pay off the shows’ back-end.

Front Lines

At a board meeting Tuesday, the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences voted not to change its eligibility rules for feature-length films. Any movie that has at least a seven-day theatre run will remain eligible. Stephen Spielberg had led a movement to increase that requirement in order to disqualify Netflix movies which do not get the usual 90-day theater-exclusive run. One change that was approved was renaming the foreign film category to International.
During an earnings call, Comcast CEO Brian Roberts said It is very much in everybody’s interest to maintain” the Hulu relationship. He added that Hulu is "really valuable and we’re glad we own a really large piece of it.” Apparently they want to find out just how valuable, since CNBC reports Comcast is in talks with Disney over whether to sell it's 1/3 stake in Hulu.
AT&T lost subscribers in all its services except wireless last quarter. TV subscribers fell 544,000 and DirecTV Now subscribers fell 83,000. WarnerMedia operating income rose 11.6% helping bolster total revenue to $44.8 billion and earnings per share of 86 cents. On the AT&T earnings call, CEO and chairman Randall Stephenson said, “The exclusivity [of NFL Sunday Ticket] should remain as we go forward on DirecTV.” The NFL has previously said it wants to expand Sunday Ticket beyond just DirecTV.
Sinemia ended US operations ahead of Avengers weekend. The shutdown comes from competition from theater chains as well as legal action over pricing. Yes, I said Sinemia, not MoviePass, which continues on. It's unclear what will happen to its service in Australia, Canada, Turkey, and UK.
AirBnB is considering building its own video studio to produce short films, documentaries and other shows about travel. Airbnb has reportedly worked on a TV show called Home for Apple’s new TV Plus subscription service; and helped produce a documentary called Gay Chorus Deep South which focused on a tour of the Southeastern US.

Dispatches From The Front

Thought this a great app for cordcutters who watch from their laptop / computer. If nothing else it allows one click start of Netflix and stops Netflix from auto playing trailers.

Clicker for Netflix - $5 so not free

When I signed up for Netflix it was because it was the place to get movies on DVD, then it was the place to stream movies, and then they came our with their originals. Now they are about to loose all of the Disney owned movies and if you look at their lineup the only recent movies available on Netflix are their originals and Disney owned movies. Soon you will be able to watch Netflix originals some older movies and Hotel Translvania 3 and for that privilege they just raised or rates.
So Netflix is basically for originals and The Borg becomes more powerful.

I would've totally upped a patreon pledge or payed a onetime fee to join in a spoilery roundtable with you guys about Avengers Endgame. I don't know if there will be a movie as big as this to do it again with (Rise of Skywalker?), but some random thoughts on logistics:

Make a spoilerin time special on the movie with an admission fee of x (small, maybe $1?) and a participation fee much bigger - $20? $50? - figure out the right window of patrons with speaking privileges for a reasonable conversation and value you want to receive for this special access to set that price.

E.g.: Think $10 for the hour is good and think that 20 people with ability talk is reasonable? Charge $5/head. This is a fake rate, but you could price it out so that it would be a revenue generator without even publishing it to the Spoilerin Time feed. Or, put it out a week later as well, because content is good. (and a week gives you time to have someone edit out anything egregious).

Given the buildup of Endgame, your position as trusted voices in the nerd world* and the community you built, it could be a nice addition to your offerings.

This was all inspired by my desire to talk to more than my family who I went to the movie with combined with the safe, thoughtful space you guys have created.
