Another milestone in the music industry’s shift to streaming: Revenue from the streaming business has become Warner Music Group’s biggest business. The company announced that money from services like Spotify and Apple Music was the single biggest source of recorded music revenue in the first quarter of the year, surpassing both physical sales and sales of digital downloads. That’s the first time any of the big music labels has hit that inflection point.
Microsoft have taken the hint and will now stop bugging users on Windows 7 and Windows 8.1 to upgrade to Windows 10. The free upgrade to Windows 10 will also end July 29, so I'd actually recommend taking up Microsoft on the offer, and upgrading while you can. It's not that bad...
Wired has an amusing article on Huawei's new P9 handset, and how closesly it resembles the Apple iPhone, even down to copying Apple's star shaped proprietary screws - which leads to the philiosphical debate - if someone copies your proprietary screws, are they still proprietary? I've not seen he Huawei P9 up close yet, but I do have an Oppo R9 in my hand and by golly does that look like an iPhone - even down to the Colour OS, which despite being android under the hood, looks and feels exaclty like iOS 9. Is imitation the sincerest form of flattery?
Business Insider is reporting that Dropbox employees are noticing some cost cutting going on, as Silicon Valley start ups try to - gasp - turn a profit. Dropbox isn’t the only high-profile startup to unleash a company wide cost-cutting campaign lately. A number of unicorn startups, worth over $1 billion, including Evernote, Jawbone, and Tango, have all gone through some form of cost cuts, whether layoffs, office closures, or reduced employee perks.
WWDC is still two months away, but the rumours of new features are starting to come through. MacRumours is reporting that iOS 10 is Likely to Include Standalone HomeKit App Designed by Apple, to unify Homekit controls under one app. In the world of iOS, if it's not an app, it doesn't exist, so it makes sense for Apple to turn homekit - which is more a collection of APIs to talk to Belkin Wemo and LIFX bulbs, into an easy to use, one stop app.
The Washington Post reports the creators of Siri have been hard at work on a new AI, set to be unveiled tomorrow at the Disrupt conference. The Verge is calling it "Siri but good", and say the bot, called Viv, will be able to talk and respond in far more natural language, and understand the context between results, so for instance - one could ask the Viv "what was the score in yesterdays Swans match against Essendon?" and after hearing of the massive 81 point win, the follow up question of "excellent, and how many did Buddy Kick?" would be understood in the context of the conversation. Buddy, of course, kicked 6 goals in yesterday's game - bringing the DTNS Sponsored Sydney Swans to number two on the ladder.
