SpaceX Launch

Listen to the sounds of the launch! Hear how NASA has taken their social media communication with new heights in an impromptu interview with one of the men who makes it happen! It’s Space! Space! Space! in this commercial free episode. Special thanks to NASA, TWiT, Leo Laporte, Lisa Kentzell, Tom Merritt and Molly Wood.

Engine Failure

At about 1 minute 19 seconds into the ascent, engine 1 suffered a sudden loss of pressure and was shut down by the on-board computers. The computers also immediately recalculated how best to burn the remaining engines to achieve orbit. The Falcon 9 was built knowing that engine failure could be a possibility and is able to achieve orbit with as many as two engine failures.

While the Dragon capsule was placed into the correct orbit and met up with the ISS, the Orbcomm satellite that was also being taken up on the Falcon 9 rocket was not so lucky. The satellite did not enter the desired orbit and eventually fell back to Earth.
