Apple CEO Tim Cook sent an email to employees Monday morning saying the government should withdraw its request for assistance cracking the passcode of an iPhone 5C and suggesting Congress form a commission on intelligence-civil liberties issues. In an op-ed on the site Lawfare, FBI Director James Comey wrote Sunday that the FBI does not want a back door, just the chance to guess the passcode without the phone deleting data. iPhone security researcher Jonathan Zdziarsky noted the FBI is also asking for a more open copy of the software for testing.

Over the weekend the FBI admitted it had reset the Apple ID password of the phone’s iCloud account eliminating the possibility of prompting a cloud backup and gaining some of the phone’s data that way.

Peace claimed to have stolen Mint’s forum database twice on Jan. 28 and Feb. 18 including email addresses, birthdates and scrambled passwords. Lefebvre confirmed on Sunday that the forum had been breached.

Facebook’s Connectivity Lab is creating maps of population concentration to help solve connectivity problems. The lab analyzed satellite images for 20 countries using Facebook’s image-recognition engine to identify human-built structures. That was combined with census data for estimates on where people lived. The team has plans to work with Columbia University's Center for International Earth Science Information Network to create a new, combined population dataset later this year and release data to the public.

Pick of the Day

I wanted to recommend to anyone who wants to improve their measurement of data, or just interested in learning how to improve their estimating skills, checkout “How To Measure Anything” by Douglas Hubbard. From Monte Carlo Simulations, to calibrating your brain to think more effectively, to Applied Information Economics (AIE) and decision economics, Doug’s book and website www.hubbardresearch.com provide a foundation to have insights about data, and the way we think and utilize it.

There’s a new DTNS app available in the Apple TV store!

Just search DTNS and you’ll find a lovely app from Dx & Sarah at Waterside Development in the UK/Amsterdam.

It takes video from the RSS and shows you the latest episode plus archives and even gives you a favorites section if you want to save episodes for later.

Dx said “we’re looking for feature suggestions (hint hint) if you can think of anything to add” So let him know your ideas!

And thanks again to them for making this as a labor of love!!
