In January, Microsoft announced the preview of end-to-end encrypted Private Conversations on Skype, and the feature is now available for all users on Skype iOS, Android, Linux, Mac, and Windows Desktop. Users can select “New Private Conversation” which sends the recipient an invite, then all calls and messages in that conversation will be encrypted end-to-end until users choose to end it. Users can participate in only one private conversation from a single device at a time, and switch the conversation to other devices, but the messages they send and receive will be tied to the device they’re using at the time.
“Minecraft: Education Edition” is coming to Apple’s iPad, along with new features created for the Education Edition and available to all players. Microsoft announced that the school version of Minecraft will debut on the iPad in September. At that time, the Minecraft: Education Edition app will be downloadable from Apple’s App Store for use with annual Education Edition subscriptions purchased from Microsoft. Free tutorials and other class resources for teachers are on the Minecraft: Education Edition site.

Apple removed thousands of gambling apps from its Chinese store after China's state-run broadcaster, China Central Television, accused Apple of not adequately removing banned content, such as illegal and fake lottery-ticket apps. On Sunday, CCTV reported that Apple pulled at least 4,000 apps tagged with the keyword “gambling” on Aug. 9 alone. Apple says it was complying with regulations.
Fitbit is really making it hard to tell the difference between a smart watch and a fitness tracker while not losing the tracker category. The Fitbit Charge 3 has a new aluminum body and Gorilla Glass 3 display with 40 percent more active screen area than the Charge 2. The Charge 3 is water resistant (up to 50 meters), and is the first tracker to get smartphone notifications. It gets seven days of battery life on a single charge (up from five days on the Charge 2).The Charge 3 will come in two models: a $149.95 Core version and a $169.95 Special Edition that features NFC and supports Fitbit Pay for payments. Preorders start today, with shipping in October.
Bittorent creator Bram Cohen criticised cryptocurrencies, using the term "goldbuggism”, and says he sees Bitcoin as something that’s fundamentally flawed, especially the wasteful mining process. This apparently includes TRON, which acquired Bittorrent. TRON’s founder recently launched the idea to “improve” Cohen’s Bittorrent protocol by integrating it into the TRON network. This will allow users to earn TRX currency by seeding files. Cohen is working on his own environmentally-friendly cryptocurrency called Chia which is based on "proof of space" not mining.
The Financial Times reports The European Union is considering forcing tech companies to delete terrorist propaganda from their platforms within 60 minutes of it being flagged or face fines. Legislation requiring a 60-minute takedown was passed in March but the guideline was voluntary. EU’s commissioner for security, Julian King, said that the EU had “not seen enough progress” on this issue, and was willing to take “stronger action in order to better protect our citizens.” King said, “We cannot afford to relax or become complacent in the face of such a shadowy and destructive phenomenon.”
Giphy launched a redesigned homepage with a feature called Stories that organizes GIFs being into themes like WWE Summer Slam, "The Affair" finale and Adorably confused dogs. One new story will be published every hour, curated by an in house editorial team. The page has been in beta but the official launch coincides with the MTV Video Music Awards. Giphy is also exploring ways to share stories beyond the app and website.
At Gamescom, NVIDIA announced consumer versions of the Turing GPU architecture that brings Ray Tracing to the desktop thanks to ”RT Core” compute units and new “Tensor Cores” for AI interfacing. Founders editions of the RTX 2080 sells for $799 and the RTX 2080 Ti for $1199 both coming September 20th and the almost as powerful but more affordable RTX 2070 for $599 coming later.. Pre-orders are live now. Non-founders prices were announced as "starting" at $499, $699, and $999. Ray tracing is a big deal because it can make more realistic lighting than rasterization. While ray tracing has been around for decades, doing it real-time on a consumer desktop has been impractical.

James from Columbus OH has thoughts on hotel security during DefCon:

In contrast to the hotels you were discussing, I recently stayed at a Hyatt in Montreal and they gave frequent guest points for each day you opted out of maid service as part of their environmental policy.

Seems to me it would be more efficient and less intrusive if the hotels you were discussing put their security effort into controlling what entered the hotel instead of searching rooms.

I think they have chosen the intrusive method out of vanity. They don't want visible security to disrupt the image of their lobby so they have these security checks going on behind the scenes.
