• LG starts selling world’s first 8K OLED TV this week

LG is taking preorders for its first 8K OLED TV, the 88-inch LG 88Z9 with 7680 x 4320 resolution. The TV's processor uses some deep learning to upscale images and generate virtual 5.1 surround sound, with support for Dolby Atmos. Preorders in Korea costs 40 million won or roughly US$34,000. Final retail will be 50 million won. The 8K TV from LG goes on sale in North America and Europe in Q3.

• Samsung announces new 13-inch and 15-inch MacBook Pros

Samsung announced new 13 and 15-inch Notebook 7 Windows laptops with diamond-cut edges, a wide trackpad and slim bezels, similar to MacBook Pros. Unlike Apple laptops, the Notebook 7s come with two USB 3.0 ports, one USB-C port, HDMI and microSD. Prices start at $999.99 coming to the US July 26. Samsung also announced the Notebook 7 Force with an Nvidia GTX 1650 graphics card, ethernet port and 16 GB of RAM base for $1499.

• U.S. State Department begins social media screening for nearly all visa applicants

The US State Department has updated its applications forms for US visa applicants requiring nearly all to submit social media usernames, previous email addresses and phone numbers. That information was previously required only for applicants deemed to need extra scrutiny, about 65,000 per year. There are approximately 15 million visa applicants to the US per year.

• China 'rigs' 5G test to favour Huawei

The Sunday Telegraph reports sources tell it that Chinese security researchers have been finding security vulnerabilities in 5G equipment from Nokia and Ericsson and passing the information to IT specialists testing the equipment. The idea is that when testing ends June 10, Huawei can point to the results to affect EU evaluations and undermine security concerns about its own equipment.

• Google will reveal Stadia launch details and price on Thursday

Google announced a live stream for Thursday, June 6 at 12pm Eastern to announce details about Google Stadia. The stream, called Stadia Connect will include launch info, game announcements and price.

• Huawei reassesses goal to be world’s bestselling smartphone vendor after US blacklist

Zhao Ming, president of the Honor brand of Huawei phones, told a media briefing in Shanghai Friday that it is "too early" to say whether the US trade restrictions on Huawei will prevent it from achieving a goal of becoming the top smartphone vendor in the world by end of next year. The South China Morning Post reports its sources say Foxconn has stopped several production lines for Huawei phones because Huawei reduced orders. It is not clear if the cut is temporary or not. And the Financial Times reports that China's Hengtong Opti-Electric will buy Huawei's 51 precent stake in Huawei Marine Systems which lays undersea cables.

• Amazon could face heightened antitrust scrutiny under a new agreement between U.S. regulators

Sources tell The Washington Post that the US Federal Trade Commission and the US Department of Justice have agreed to divide their focus on Amazon and Google, often a step taken preparatory to antitrust investigations. The two agencies agreed to give the FTC more jurisdiction over Amazon and the DoJ more jurisdiction over Google. Reuters says its sources say the DoJ got jurisdiction for Apple as well with the FTC getting jurisdiction for Facebook.

• Oppo shows off working ‘under-display’ camera

Oppo posted a video to Weibo and Twitter showing a notchless phone with the front-facing camera under the screen. Oppo VP Brian Shen noted that at this stage in development there would be some loss in optical quality. Hours later, Xiaomi's president Lin Bin posted a video on Weibo of the Xiaomi Mi 9 with a prototype front-facing camera behind the screen.
