Sources tell 9to5Mac that Apple is working on sleep tracking for the Apple Watch and may announce the feature next week along with updated Apple Watches when the company is expected to announce its new iPhone line. Reportedly called "time in bed tracking", the new feature will rate quality of sleep with multiple sensors, movement tracking, heart rate, and noise data. Huawei announced on Twitter that it'll unveil the upcoming Mate 30 on September 19th in Munich. Huawei is currently in its second 90-day reprieve from the US government's export ban, which would mean Google can't certify new Android phones, which would mean no Google Apps on the Mate 30. Huawei hasn't said whether or not it plans to launch the Mate 30 with its own Harmony, or HongMeng, OS.
Mozilla launched Firefox 69 for Windows, Mac, Linux, and Android on Tuesday. which now includes blocking third-party tracking cookies and cryptomining by default, performance improvements on Windows 10, and better battery life on macOS. It will also ask for permission before running Flash, which is planned for total retirement in 2020. Firefox 69 for desktops is available for download on firefox.com and existing users can upgrade automatically, and Firefox for Android is rolling out slowly to Google Play users.
As Wi-Fi 6 support makes its way into phones, laptops and network equipment, engineers are turning work to Wi-Fi 7, which can handle speeds as high as 30 gigabits per second, better streaming video, longer ranges and fewer issues with traffic congestion. Wi-Fi 7 is expected to arrive in 2024 after a series of improvements to WiFi 6. also called 802.11ax. At Qualcomm's WiFi Day in August, VP of Technology VK Jones said Wi-Fi 6's first improvement will be more capacity from new airwaves that US and European governments are likely to open up for radio transmission as soon as next year. An update to Wi-Fi 6 in 2022 should improve speeds, then a collection of Wi-Fi upgrades are expected in 2024 under the technical name 802.11be, likely to be called WiFi 7.
Sources tell Bloomberg that Samsung will unveil its second foldable device early next year, a 6.7-inch display device that can fold into a compact-sized square. Samsung's first foldable device, the Galaxy Fold, has yet to launch after complaints about design glitches led to its delayed release. Samsung is said to be working with American designer Thom Browne on its upcoming foldable phone to appeal to fashion, status and luxury standards in addtion to tech specs, which include a hole-punch selfie camera and two rear-facing cameras that become front-facing cameras when the device is closed.
YouTube wrote in a blog post that its teams have removed more than 100,000 videos and 17,000 channels since the company implemented new hateful content policies in June, and points out this is roughly 5 times as many as the previous quarter. YouTube says roughly “80 percent of those auto-flagged videos were removed before they received a single view in the second quarter of 2019." The removed content is a small fraction of YouTube's total channel number, which was 23 million in 2018 according to analytics firm Social Blade.
Zerodium, which says it resells software exploits to government and law enforcement agencies, updated its price list today, making Android exploits worth more than iOS exploits for the first time ever. Zerodium says a zero-click exploit chain for Android can go for up to $2.5M in rewards to hackers and security researchers, versus $2M for a similar exploit chain in iOS. Zerodium offered a maximum of $200K a year ago, this number is twelve times that. Google's official release for Android 10 is scheduled for Tuesday afternoon.
