Friday, the Wall Street Journal reported Intel was considering an acquisition of Broadcom. Intel would face increased pressure if Broadcom were to acquire Qualcomm.
Microsoft announced today that its Teams app, which competes with Slack and workplace apps from Google and Facebook, is now used by 200,000 organizations in 181 markets and 39 languages. That number is a big jump from 125,000 organizations in September 2017 and 50,000 when it launched out of preview a year ago. New features on deck for Team this year include cloud recording with auto-transcription, Cortana integration, and mobile sharing during meetings.
Uber Eats is expanding on-demand food delivery service to serve 100 new cities across Europe, the Middle East and Africa this year, including areas in Ireland, Egypt, Kenya, the Czech Republic, the Ukraine and Romania. Uber says its Eats business is profitable in 45 of the 200 markets where it already operates. In EU markets, Uber has launched free insurance packages for delivery couriers to help satisfy EU regulators regarding its operating practices with Uber Eats in the region.
Bose announced its Bose AR audio Augmented Reality glasses, which look like normal sunglasses with thickened sides for speakers, motion-sensors and a touchpad. The US FCC says Swarm Technologies launched four small internet satellites in January without authorization. The satellites were part of the Indian Space Agency's launch on January 12, but no operator was identified on the cargo list. Swarm was founded by former Google aerospace engineer Sara Spangelo and developer Benjamin Longmier who sold his previous company to Apple. The four satellites are part of Swarm's SpaceBees plans for a space-based low-cost internet network. Their launch plans had been rejected because the small satellites are difficult to track risking catastrophic collision with other objects.
Apple is acquiring digital newsstand app Texture, formerly known as Next Issue, which gives readers access to around 200 magazines for a $9.99 monthly fee. Eddy Cue, Apple’s senior vice president of Internet Software & Services, said in a statement, “We are committed to quality journalism from trusted sources and allowing magazines to keep producing beautifully designed and engaging stories for users.” Texture will continue development on apps for iOS, Android, Amazon Kindle Fire and Windows 8 and 10 and Apple will buy the full company, including employees.
Elon Musk tweeted that the Boring company will switch to prioritizing pedestrians and cyclists in its tunnels and Hyperloop systems. Cars would still be transported but only after mass transit needs are met. The idea is to have thousands of stations the size of a parking lot that would give you access to a shuttle that could take you through underground tunnels to your desired location.
