Google starts noting fact check articles, Instagram comes to Windows 10, VMWare partners with Amazon.
Headlines
- Google will start adding a "Fact Check" tag next to news stories in the expanded story box in Google News in the UK and US as well as on Android and iOS Google News and Weather apps. The tags are similar to the existing Highly Cited or In Depth tags. Sites must add proper markup and follow commonly accepted criteria to be considered fact checking articles.
- Instagram launched its app for Windows 10 PCs and tablets. Unlike the Windows mobile one launched in April this one is a universal app. Only devices with a touchscreen may upload images, all other features work as they do on other platforms.
- Samsung said Friday it expects losses related to the discontinuation of the Note 7 to end up in the mid-2 trillion won range for Q4 and 1 trillion won in Q1. That would be a total of about US$3 billion. Wednesday Samsung estimated third quarter losses at around US$2.3 billion making the total loss more than $5 billion. Samsung plans to expand sales of the Galaxy S7 and S7 Edge to make up some of the gap. Samsung also said it will make, "significant changes in its quality assurance processes."
- Amazon and VMWare announced an anticipated partnership called "VMWare Cloud on AWS." All of VMWare's software-defined data center products— like vSphere, VSAN and NSX— will run on AWS. The service is in preview. Invite-only betas will begin in early 2017 and come out of beta mid-year. VMWare will operate, sell and support the product while integrating it with AWS' cloud portfolio, like think storage, database and analytics. Early customers include Western Digital and Sysco. That's Sysco with an S. The one that does restaurant supplies not the one with a C that does networking equipment.
- At a reporters round table Thursday, Verizon General Counsel Craig Silliman was asked about the effect of Yahoo's recently disclosed data breach on Verizon's plan to pay $4.8 billion to acquire Yahoo. Silliman said, “I think we have a reasonable basis to believe right now that the impact is material.” If Its determined that the breach had a material or adverse effect on the value of Yahoo, Verizon could halt the acquisition and renegotiate. Silliman said Verizon has "a significant way to go" before it decides what to do.
- Facebook has added support for Apple's AirPlay and Google's Cast function. When watching a video in your Facebook app tap the TV button in the top right and select the device you want to stream to. You can continue to browse facebook while the video plays on your TV. The function is live in the iOS app and coming to Android soon. YouTube and Periscope have similar functions.
- IBM, Google, Nvidia, AMD and five other companies have partnered on an open specification to improve data center server performance. Open Coherent Accelerator Processor Interface (OpenCAPI) promises to speed up big data, machine learning, analytics and more by up to 10 times. The spec will be available publicly by the end of the year with servers and related products expected in the second half of 2017. Intel is not part of the consortium.
- Tinder announced a new Smart Photos algorithm Thursday. It alternates the first photos shown, notes which ones get a positive right swipe and adjusts to always show your best performing picture first. To enable Smart Photos, you need to tap the Smart Photos toggle in the "edit profile" tab.
- A team of scientists from the University of Nottingham with support from the Royal Astronomical Society (RAS), has determined that the universe contains at least two trillion galaxies, 10 times more than the highest previous estimates. The previous estimate was 100 to 200 billion. 90 percent of all galaxies are hidden from us, and only the remaining 10 percent can be seen. The paper detailing the study was published today in the Astrophysical Journal.
- According to Gartner, Q3 shipments of Macs have declined 13.4 percent compared to the year-ago quarter. Q3 of last year was Apple's best Mac quarter ever.
- Twitter user WalkingCat found several references to "Windows 10 Version 1703" in the latest test versions of Microsoft's operating system. The four digit code has usually ended with the month of release. 1607 came out in July and 1511 in November. So WalkingCat logically assumes the next version of Windows will arrive in March. Microsoft may announce official dates at its Surface event October 26.
