Headlines
- Nature.com is reporting that next month, the worldwide semiconductor industry will formally acknowledge it will no longer pursue Moore's law, the principle that has powered chip design since the 1960s. As everyone listening would know, Moore's law states that the number of transistors on a microprocessor chip will double every two years or so — which has generally meant that the chip's performance will, too. In recent years, the rise of mobile chipsets has seen Moore's Law had already begin to falter, thanks to the heat that is unavoidably generated when more and more silicon circuitry is jammed into the same small area. Is this the end of an era or the dawn of quantum computing?
- Popular Mechanics reports on a new Android app available today from the Google Play store, which can be used to detect earthquakes. The app is smart enough to ignore bumps and shakes from your commute, but will be able to detect the telltale rumblings of an earthquake forming, effectively turning mobile phones into a distributed early warning system. The new Android app is called MyShake, and was developed by a team of seismologists and computer scientists at the University of California, Berkeley. Developers promise the app is not a battery killer, the app uses about the same amount of battery as a phone in idle mode. So Android users, go download it today!
- Ars Technica reports on a bug in the latest version of Adobe Creative Cloud, that deletes user's data from the root directory of a Mac. Popular back up software Backblaze first noticed the problem, after it saw a large spike in users needing to restore data from the service. An Adobe spokeswoman issued a beautifully understated response that read: "We are aware that some customers have experienced this issue and we are investigating in order to resolve the matter as quickly as possible. We are stopping the distribution of the update until the issue has been resolved."
- Murk Gurman of 9to5 Mac is reporting his sources tell him the new iPhone 5se and iPad Air 3 will go on sale March 18th. The rumored iPhone 5se is a 4 inch version of the iPhone with the internals of an iPhone 6, while the Air 3 is rumored to include support for the Apple Pencil. Both devices, which we should again point out are just rumors at this stage, appear to target users who think the iPhone 6 and the iPad Pro are just too damn big.
- The Next Web reports that YouTube has acquired the company BandPage. BandPage helps musicians connect with fans and promote music, mainly through the creation of dynamic Band pages on Facebook, so it's interesting that Google and Youtube are behind the acquisition. Disclaimer: My wife doesn't work for YouTube.

- Engadget reports that the summer of cable recalls continues. This time Apple is recalling USB C Cables that shipped with the 12" Macbook sold between April and June 2015. Unlike the recent recalls of Apple and Microsoft Surface power adapters, the faulty USB C cable poses no threat of fire or electrical shock, instead the cables may fail to charge. Full details of the recall can be found in the show notes.

- And earlier this week, Hannah Francis of Fairfax wrote Dallas Buyer's Club LLC decided not to appeal the ruling against it from August last year, effectively ending the long running court case. Dallas Buyer's Club LLC lawyer, Michael Bradley said "The problem isn't going away; Australia is still one of the most prominent jurisdictions for infringement, and rights holders will continue to feel that they're losing a lot of money, so I expect they'll continue to look for ways of deterring that behavior." A lot has been made of the strategy of Dallas Buyers Club LLC, in targeted the third largest ISP in the country, but I'm more interested in why Hollywood would choose an arthouse movie to spearhead its anti-piracy campaign.

- The Ecamm call recorder for Skype. If you're hearing this right now, then Ecamm call recorder worked. It's a great little program, you can set it to auto record, set quality of the recording, etc.
