Facebook is launching its own version of playable ads across its platforms. Playable ads let a player try out the game before downloading and are more likely to keep playing after installing. Facebook's playable ads launch a video of the game first and then shift to HTML 5 for interactivity. The effort was in beta for more than a year. Facebook also introduced retention optimization which charges more for ads delivered to people more likely to keep playing a game and value optimization which helps target players likely to make in-app purchases.
The Information now says its sources tell it Google is developing a news app for China, that would pick news algorithmically and work within the bounds of Chinese restrictions. Netherlands-based Efteling theme park is taking part in The Next Web and Vodafone's IoT challenge to connect established companies with startups to solve problems. The idea is to reduce downtime and maintenance cost. Two companies are potential partners. Amsterdam's OneWatt, uses AI to detect problems in motors. It could help predict ride malfunctions before they happen and schedule maintenance when the ride is not in use, to prevent downtime. One of the challenges is that background noise is more predictable in an industrial setting than in a theme park. So it's harder to filter out. That's an opportunity for Helsinki's Noiseless Acoustics which detects problems in the sound of machines. Their sensors and AI could learn to filter out the background noise and then pass along the resulting profile to OneWatt.
URIDU, a German non-profit, is using solar-powered MP3 players to bring health informattion to people in remote regions, specifically Aka women living in the Central African Republic and Congo. The info is performed as a song by indigenous musicians. One big topic? Preventing diarrhea, which is reported to lead to the deaths of 2,195 children every day. The Aka have no official written language and often have limited to no access to written materials on healthcare, so the information is presented in songs stored on the MP3 players.

John has some Moviepass feedback and says he plans to cancel the service:
The biggest deal breaker for my wife and I was Peak Pricing. This was implemented in July and was touted to be a "small" surcharge on movies that were in high demand in your area. At first I was ok with this, since the theaters here aren't always crowded and we could probably find a showing that didn't have the surcharge on it at a decent time. The proved to not be true. Last week starting on Thursday, every movie and showing had the surcharge on them at every theater around us. This included the 10:30pm showing of Teen Titans Go. I can't really see that showing being in high demand. This continued until Monday when no show had the surcharge. the "small" surcharge was 50% of the normal ticket price.

With this change, and the removal of new movies from the service we decided to cancel the service. When the price change was announced, without the removal of all these restrictions, my wife and I knew we had made the right choice. We were willing to pay $20 a month for the service, if it didn't have all these restrictions, but now we are back to buying tickets at normal price and have the convenience of buying tickets ahead of time. When your local theater has reserved seating, that is a bonus to that convenience.
