Look. We’re not saying Mark Gurman of 9 to 5 Mac and John Paczkowski of BuzzFeed are *always* right about Apple rumors, but when both of them agree it becomes hard to fit in doubt. Both reporters have sources who say Apple plans to hold an event March 15th in which it will announce a 4-inch iPhone, a new iPad Air and new Apple Watch Bands. Gurman seems pretty confident the phone will be called the iPhone 5SE.
Mark Zuckerberg announced on Facebook that WhatsApp now has a billion users, the most of any messaging app, according to Fortune. The 2nd most popular message app is Facebook Messenger with 800 million monthly users followed by Tencent’s Wechat with 650 million users and Tencent's QQ with 639 million.
Microsoft has changed the Windows 10 upgrade in Windows update from optional to recommended according to ZDNet’s Mary Jo Foley. This means Windows 10 will automatically begin the upgrade process and download for users with automatic updates turned on. However, users will still be prompted for approval of the install. Those that do install, have 31 days to roll back to their previous Windows version.

A new safe harbor agreement for data transfer between the United States and Europe has been agreed. European Commissioner Vera Jourova and US Commerce Secretary Penny Pritzker finsihed the agreement late Monday night. The new agreement will be overseen by an independent ombudsman and will have annual reviews. The commissioner said the agreement should take about three months to implement.
Digital Trends has a story about an exoskeleton from SuitX called the Phoenix, meant to replace wheeled mobility devices like wheelchairs. At 27 pounds it weighs half as much as the popular ReWalk exoskeleton. The battery lasts for 4 hours of continuous walking or 8 hours of intermittent use. It’s modular so it can adapt to more needs and can be fine tuned to a particular gait using an Android app. It costs $40,000 which is around half what most other exoskeletons cost. SuitX is accepting preorders now and expects to ship the first unit in March.

Nintendo announced quarterly operating profit of ¥33.5 billion up 7% year over year and revenue of ¥224.5 billion down 17%. Nintendo sold 1.87 million Wii U systems in the quarter, down 2% year over year. Nintendo has sold 12.6 million Wii U’s since launch in 2012. But you can forget ALL of that because all anybody wants to talk about is that company president Tatsumi Kimishima said on the earnings call that Nintendo is “looking into” VR.
Baidu has published some data from usage of their DU Battery Saver and DU Speed Booster apps for Android. North And South Americans use more of their battery than those in the Middle East and North Africa. Asian users upgraded their phone the most frequently, North Americans took the longest. The report did not cover, Europe, Africa or Australia. Other tidbits, 16 apps are running on any give Android phone and the most common problem is overheating.
Tech in Asia passes along data from Canalys that Samsung has taken over as the top selling smartphone maker in India, bumping Micromax back to second. Lenovo rose to third. Intex, Karbonn, and Lava all saw declines.
Cuba’s state telecom, Etecsa announced it will allow residential broadband service in two areas in Havana. Bars and restaurants will also be allowed to order service. Huawei will operate the fibre-optic connections.
The Fine Brothers posted to Medium Monday night that they have rescinded all trademarks and applications for brands related to reaction videos. They also discontinued a planned program to license their reaction video format to other people.

Yahoo Inc announced today that it is exploring an "aggressive strategic plan" to simplify the company, narrowing its focus on areas of strength to better fuel growth and drive revenue. They plan to slash staff by about 15 percent, close offices in Dubai, Mexico City, Buenos Aires, Madrid, and Milan and exit certain product lines. According to Re/Code's Kara Swisher, Yahoo Chairman Maynard Webb said that in addition to trying to reverse spin its Alibaba holdings, Yahoo would also be taking meetings on "qualified strategic proposals.” The company reported revenue of $1.27 billion and $0.30 earnings per share for the fourth quarter — that’s up from $1.25 billion in revenue and down from earnings of $0.33 per share last year (Q4 2014). Analysts, on average, expected Yahoo to report revenue of $1.19 billion and earnings of $0.13 per share for the quarter. Yahoo shares have declined 34% over the last year, down 12% in 2016.

You had a story bout how Google wants to get more control over nexus phone hardware and make its own phones. If that’s true then why did they get rid of Motorola. They had a company that could have made the nexus brand!
