Apple removed thousands of gambling apps from its Chinese store after China's state-run broadcaster, China Central Television, accused Apple of not adequately removing banned content, such as illegal and fake lottery-ticket apps. On Sunday, CCTV reported that Apple pulled at least 4,000 apps tagged with the keyword “gambling” on Aug. 9 alone. Apple says it was complying with regulations.
ARM has detailed its next two generations of CPU cores following the A76 – Deimos and Hercules. Both future cores are based on the new A76 micro-architecture. Deimos is its 2019 successor aiming at more wide-spread 7nm adoption. Hercules is reportedly the next phase of the microarchitecture for 2020 products and the first 5nm implementations.
Fitbit announced the Fitbit Charge 3, which has a new aluminum body and Gorilla Glass 3 display, plus a touchscreen with support for grayscale colors and 40 percent more active screen area than the Charge 2. The Charge 3 is water resistant (up to 50 meters), plus an upgraded heart rate sensor. The Charge 3 now offers up to seven days of battery life on a single charge (up from five days on the Charge 2).The Charge 3 will come in two models: a $149.95 Core version and a $169.95 Special Edition that features NFC and supports Fitbit Pay for payments. Preorders start today, with shipping in October.
Bittorent creator Bram Cohen criticized cryptocurrencies, using the term "goldbuggism”, and says he sees Bitcoin as something that’s fundamentally flawed, especially the wasteful mining process. This apparently includes TRON, which acquired Bittorrent. TRON’s founder recently launched the idea to “improve” Cohen’s Bittorrent protocol by integrating it into the TRON network. This will allow users to earn TRX currency by seeding files.
“Minecraft: Education Edition” is coming to Apple’s iPad, along with new features created for the Education Edition and available to all players. Microsoft announced that the school version of Minecraft will debut on the iPad in September. At that time, the Minecraft: Education Edition app will be downloadable from Apple’s App Store for use with annual Education Edition subscriptions purchased from Microsoft. Free tutorials and other class resources for teachers are on the Minecraft: Education Edition site.
In January, Microsoft announced the preview of end-to-end encrypted Private Conversations on Skype, and the feature is now available for all users on Skype iOS, Android, Linux, Mac, and Windows Desktop. Users can select “New Private Conversation” which sends the recipient an invite, then all calls and messages in that conversation will be encrypted end-to-end until users choose to end it. Users can participate in only one private conversation from a single device at a time, and switch the conversation to other devices, but the messages they send and receive will be tied to the device they’re using at the time.
Amazon's smart devices are getting price cuts - the Echo Plus is now down to $100 and comes with a free Hue bulb, and the Echo Show is now $130. The Show brings the usual voice support but also has a built-in 7-inch screen.
