Google’s Platform Versions page shows Android Marshmallow has reached 10.1% adoption, 8 months after release. It was the fastest-growing version of Android too, increasing 2.6 percentage points since May. Marshmallow is now the third most popular Android distribution, behind Lollipop and KitKat.
The US FAA warned pilots that experiments at the Naval Air Weapons Center in the Mojave Desert could affect planes’ GPS in the area. The Notice to Airmen (NOTAM) only described it as "GPS Interference Testing" with no other details. The test began June 7 and affects a wider area the higher it gets. Embraer Phenom 300 business jets particularly are advised to avoid the area on six dates in June from 9:30 AM to 3 PM. At 40,000 feet the affected area stretches from the California Oregon border to the Mexican border and east into Utah.

Developers at Tendigi created a homemade iPhone case that lets you run Android on an iPhone. Nick Lee used a Nexus 5 connected to an iPhone by cable to develop tools that transmitted the Android devices screen to the iPhone and send touch-input back from the iPhone to the Android device. Lee then made and Android development board and 3D-printed and enclosure to house it in the shape of an iPhone case.
A design patent from Magic Leap shows a helmet with slits to view the real world, that isn’t far different from VR headsets or the Microsoft HoloLens. It has a helmet like covering for the back a strap the goes from the back to the front of your head and a shield-like mask over the eyes. The patent describes "projecting images to a waveguide through microprojectors for augmented or virtual reality.” and "providing variable depth planes through arrays of reflectors."

Pick of the Day

A simple and free piece of transcription software for short web videos that has very recently saved my bacon.

While it doesn't transcribe the speech to text for you (sad) it does make it really easy to take a video transcript and put it in the correct format for Facebook and other videos. For Mac & Windows.

I was so excited when I first saw the title of yesterday's episode because I have long been yearning for the flexible phone. I hadn't even considered the use cases discussed by yourself and Patrick about expanding screen sizes.

My own interest is much more simple: No more cracked screens!

I would love to hear your opinion on the matter.

Thanks for everything that you do, I really enjoy the show.

Thanks,

The way I see a flexible screen ... using a phone hands-free where the phone is more of an arm brace that covers the forearm. So that it can be portable but when you need a tablet device you take it off roll it out on a flat surface . One of the benefits for this form factor is that sensors could be add to the back to measure you blood pressure, oxygen level, temperature, etc...

Tom et. al.,

In addition to unique passwords per site, 2-factor/2-step verification, and LastPass -- when I can -- I do the following.

For sites that use an e-mail address as a login I make the address unique. I take advantage of the + symbol gmail allows in an address. So an email address [email protected] used as a login could become [email protected].

Even if my email and password leak from another site not only is my password unique my login is unique too.

Oddly, I haven't been so good about varying my login when it's not required or even not allowed to be an e-mail address.

Thank you for a consistently great show!

I answer (security questions) based on my backstory for my D&D character. Now this is will not work for everyone, but the basis is solid. You can base you security question answers on a good friend, or person you dislike, rather than your own identity.

Hey Tom and Scott, Marlon "TheGuyFromTrinidad" here, yesterday you mentioned that twitter got a material design makeover and some Android fans get really excited when apps get material design. Now I know you know why we get excited but I wanted to quickly share the reasons for other iOS users like Scott who may not know and also why Twitter getting MD was such a big deal. Android apps have a history of getting really crappy ports of iOS apps that didn't take into consideration how Android operates. When MD launched suddenly we had apps that looked great and worked fantastic and devs who switch to MD usually saw an uptick in usage and downloads. Pair that with the fact that Twitter has always been horrible on Android and superstar Android developer and creator of the acclaimed Twitter client Falcon Pro, Joaquim Verges was hired by twitter and is behind the redesign and you can see why its a big deal.

Love the show.
