This Week in Space

Just before the recording, SpaceX released a video of the first test of their "Grasshopper" rocket. It only rose up about 6ft into the air before landing, however this is the first step toward a fully reusable 3-stage rocket. In a few months they plan to have another test where the rocket rises a few hundred feet into the air.

There is a new plan create a base orbiting the moon, however due to low budgets they want to reuse old ISS parts. Who knows when, or even if, this will happen, but in the meantime we have the SLS system that will use Shuttle boosters and some Russian engines. NASA says that the first unmanned test flight of the SLS rockets will happen in 2017. Andrew is VERY skeptical about their timeline because NASA has never been able to deliver anything on time.

Justin also mentions an article in which Elon Musk talked about getting back in the dating scene and he calculated that a woman would need about 10 hours a week from him.

Bacon Shortage

There is currently a surplus of droughts in the world. THERE'S TOO MANY DROUGHTS! Because of this the crops are suffering and because the crops are suffering, the pigs are suffering. This means that all of our worst fears are about to come true: there is an unavoidable bacon shortage in our future.

Brian suggests that we just switch over to lab grown bacon. While this seems like just a beautiful dream, Andrew says that now it's science fact! We can now grow leather in a lab and we are close to being able to using pig stem-cells to grow all sorts of pork products.

Also, here's a video of a pig rescuing a goat.

Ben Franklin is Awesome

He really is. Read his auto-biography.

The New Makerbot

The new makerbot has a resolution of about 100 microns, about as thick as a piece of paper. As these 3D printers become better and cheaper, we will probably see our daily lives change drastically as they become a standard appliance in our homes.
