Headlines

It's time to change all your passwords - 642 million accounts have been accessed across LinkedIn, Tumblr, Myspace this week - and to celebrate, here's some stories of recent hacks.
A young fellow by the name of 'acedtect' on twitter passed along a great piece from Ars Technica, discussing the possible Team Viewer hacks over the week. Team Viewer has stated there service has not been compromised, and any data breaches would be down to people using the same password on multiple sites. Regardless, teamviewer has upped security on the service, you will now be alerted if teamviwer suspects ne'er do wells are accessing your account - such as IP addresses outside your country, etc.
Staying with Ars Technica, they have a guest post by security expert Jeremi M. Gosney, who explains in terrifying detail how the LinkedIn password dump will make cracking passwords even easier in the future.
A U.S. congressional committee has launched an investigation into the Federal Reserve’s cyber security practices after a Reuters report revealed more than 50 cyber breaches at the U.S. central bank between 2011 and 2015.
Let's lighten the mood by discussing ridiculously overpriced start up IPOs. The Australian Financial Review has a great article on local tech start up, Guvera, a music streaming service that is valuing itself at $1.2 billion dollars. Guvera is kinda like Spotify, with three key difference - one free account users can download tracks for offline - handy if you have a small data cap, two brands can create playlists - and this is where Guvera plans to make the majority of it's cash.
India successfully launched a scale model of a reusable spacecraft last month, a project that in time could pit the nation against billionaires Jeff Bezos and Elon Musk in the race to make access to space cheaper and easier. The winged vessel – one-fifth of full size – blasted off on a rocket from Sriharikota base on the southeastern coast, the Indian Space Research Organisation said. The spacecraft reached an altitude of 65 kilometres and glided back at supersonic speeds for a splashdown in the Bay of Bengal. The test took about 13 minutes.
News.com.au passes along a story that "fitness apps" do nothing in helping the wearer get fit. The study submitted to the European Obesity Summit compared over 3000 apps, and found most were not based on empirical research, and some calorie trackers were 'wildly inaccurate" at counting calories.
The Daily Mail, which must be the ugliest website on the entire internet, reports that Google is working on a big red button to kill all its AI if needed, as an insurance policy for when the robots rise up and turn against us. I'm sure robots will not feel at all threatened by the existence of a kill switch, and not see it as a declaration of war. The Daily Mail is a pretty awful tabloid site, so take this story with a hefty grain of salt.
