Get Off My Man
Number 274
Broadcast Date May 22, 2019
Episode Length 01:08:59
Hosts Brian Brushwood, Justin Robert Young
Guests C. Robert Cargill

It's a beard convention with C. Robert Cargill in this in-studio, between-the-sheets episode. We're still awash in the Avengers: Endgame afterglow and talk openly about it, crediting on movies, and a steak bet is remembered and revived!

The plugs up front

C. Robert Cargill is on the show, you can see his little indie movie Dr. Strange or listen to his podcasts Write Along with David and Cargill and Junk Food Cinema, and follow him on twitter at https://twitter.com/massawyrm.

Almost Live

It's a show that was pre-recorded, because Justin is taking a well-deserved break in Italy for two weeks. Brian and Justin are in the studio in Austin with longtime friend of the show C. Robert Cargill, who you may remember from such screenwriting jobs as "Dr. Strange." The first subject was, of course, Cargill's beard. This progressed to Justin's beard, to going to a barber (or hair stylist), and having one's eyebrows trimmed.

Avengers: End Game (SPOILERS)

At the time of the recording, everyone had just seen Avengers: Endgame and they immediately launched into a spoiler-filled discussion. Skip forward to about the 20 minute mark in the episode to avoid the spoilers (nobody cares).

Everybody Knows Cargill

Since Cargill knows everyone in Hollywood personally, this was a good jumping off point to some aspects of writing in Hollywood that maybe you didn't know about, like the Marvel Creative Committee, and how arbitration for who gets credit in writing a script works.

They also talked a bit about how much Cargill loves the 1980 Flash Gordon movie, and he once did a showing of the movie with Sam Jones doing a script read with him, and the only script they could get was the one registered with the Library of Congress and bore only a passing resemblance to how the movie turned out.

Cargill related a story of going to a writers convention and meeting Neil Gaiman, and a story that dovetailed into Kevin Smith's famous story of writing a script for the Tim Burton/Nicolas Cage Superman that ultimately did not get made but the producers were demanding a giant mechanical spider which they got in their next movie Wild Wild West.

This episode they didn't do the Patreon Name Chant Corner Hour or the THE BIT BOSS but you can still support Night Attack at https://patreon.com/nightattack and https://twitch.tv/nightattack.

Steak Bet Redux

In 2011, on the NSFW show T'aint Correct, Cargill, Brian and Justin made a steak bet of who would win the 2012 Election, and Cargill won. This time around they made a new steak bet where Brian and Justin bet that Trump will win the 2020 election, and Cargil bet that either one of the BBW (Bernie, Beto, Warren) Democrats would. Justin thinks Bernie will get the Democratic nomination, but lose to Trump.

There was a considerable discussion about politics at this point. If you like that sort of thing, you'll probably like it.

Facebook's Privacy is Important, to someone

They watched a video where Mark Zuckerberg from the Facebook tried to make a privacy joke which fell flat. Fuck that guy.

Diamond Time, Movie Draft, Mailbag

It's a pre-recorded episode so they didn't do Diamond Time, the movie draft, or the mailbag.

Quotes

  • "They're gonna make a Dr. Strange Movie" - Cargill, while at the theater seeing "Captain America: The Winter Soldier", not aware he would be the writer.

Fun Facts

  • Although the show was pre-recorded, for the twitch premiere Producer Bryce Castillo played "Marbles on Stream" with the community before the broadcast.
