Epic Games cofounder Tim Sweeney wrote an editorial in The Guardian criticizing that games written for Universal Windows Platform must be sold through the Windows Store which gives Microsoft a 30% cut. A setting that would allow side-loading is buried. Sweeney claims some new Windows features are available exclusively in UWP. At the same time UWP does not yet support things like SLI or crossfire. Kevin Gallo, VP of Windows told The Guardian, “The Universal Windows Platform is a fully open ecosystem, available to every developer, that can be supported by any store.”
Oculus founder Palmer Luckey has been making public comments regarding why Oculus is deferring support for OS X. He told ShackNews “If they ever release a good computer we will do it.” And added, “"If they prioritize higher-end GPUs like they used to for a while back in the day, we’d love to support Mac.” Development Kits had supported OS X and Linux.

Amazon told TechCrunch “In the fall when we released Fire OS 5, we removed some enterprise features that we found customers weren’t using. All Fire tablets’ communication with Amazon’s cloud meet our high standards for privacy and security including appropriate use of encryption.”

Ars Technica reports France’s National Assembly passed an amendment yesterday that would penalize companies that do not provide access to encrypted data during terrorism investigations. Penalties include fines up to €350,000 and up to five years in jail. The amendment is part of bill to combat terrorism and organized crime. The National Assembly will vote on the bill March 8th before it moves on to the Senate.
The San Bernardino Distrct Attorney filed an application for an amicus brief in the Apple case stating that the iPhone 5C Apple has been asked to help break into may have been used, “to introduce a lying dormant cyber pathogen that endangers San Bernardino's infrastructure.” security researcher Jonathan Zdziarski told Ars Technica, "The world has never seen what he is describing coming from an iPhone.”

Sony announced a new research and development group Thursday, called Future Lab Program promising to "share concept prototypes with users while still at the development stage." Its first project is called “N” and promises to deliver audio without having to insert an object in your ear. In a video a woman wears a device around her neck. Sony says it will show off N and some other prototypes at SXSW Interactive next week.
Reuters reports Facebook said "From the start of April ... UK sales made directly by our UK team will be booked in the UK, not Ireland.” The move comes in response to changes to tax law in the UK regarding profits shifted offshore. Facebook did not clarify if that meant it currently booked sales by UK staff to UK clients through Ireland. That would break UK and international tax laws.
Google confirmed that starting next week, it will delist right-to-be-forgotten links from all its search results worldwide, if the user is detected to come from the EU. Google said it will, “use geolocation signals (like IP addresses).” This will be in addition to the current practice of delisting from all European versions of Google’s search engine.
Nintendo announced a new 3DS XL variant sporting a Super Famicom color and graphic scheme. It’s set for an April release in Japan, and will retail for around 21,600 yen(US$190). Nintendo also announced it would be releasing classic SNES games like Super Mario World and F-Zero for the updated 3DS XL with 2 analog sticks in the E-Shop.
Xiaomi’s CEO Lei Jun has softened his stance against a possible IPO for Xiaomi. Tech In Asia reports that Jun said in a speech he is “considering following Alibaba’s lead, and setting up an internal options trading system to incentivize employees while we haven’t listed. But because we have investors and employees, Xiaomi is not ruling out an IPO.”

Discussion

Pick of the Day

Seeing as it is clearly wifi and router week I thought I'd offer up my favourite router, anything running dd-wrt.

dd-wrt is an open source firmware replacement for a large range of routers and common chipsets. Its based on Linux and has a large range of advanced networking features not commonly found in most routers.

One of the best features is policy based routing, the ability to send certain traffic out a different interface such as a VPN connection hosted on the router.

The usual warnings apply, being an open source and community supported project it may not be for everyone, it has a decent web GUI, but I also spend a fair amount of time at a bash prompt.

Thanks,

Hi Tom & Justin,

(Bob & Fred here from the break room) to answer your Six Flags Samsung Gear VR questions.

1) The devices will be the new Galaxy S7 phone inside a Gear VR.

2) They are secured with an additional chin strap so they don't fly off.

3) You will need to be 13 and older. It's also optional and free.

4) There are already a bunch of parks in Europe & Asia that offer VR Coaster rides:

http://www.vrcoaster.com/

They originally experimented with the Oculus units, but have since switched to Gear VR devices as they are easier to maintain and keep clean.

We are just brought it to the US, added some characters from DC Comics & fighter jet along with the best G-Force coasters on the planet.

Here is what we saw at the IAPPA trade show that sold our team:

Love the show, and maybe we could bring this to Spectacle Fest.

And Joe from Huntsville speculates

1) This will allow them to rebrand and change the ride complexion with just software changes. A new adventure each year without having to risk adding or changing ride tracks.

2) Add and change advertisement. You think Nas Car can sell advertisements, this can allow six flags to place ads as part of the ride experience.

3) Eventually, they will probably allow the passenger to select from multiple possible trips. So, even if you are in the same ride car with your friend, you can experience different visual environments.

Ashish wanted to let us know why he thinks Apple has passed Xiaomi as the 6th best selling phone in India

The brand. Like everywhere else in the world, Apple has impeccable brand value, and carrying an iPhone is considered a status symbol by many (not everyone, especially not the savvy folks, but many all the same)
Older versions of the iPhone are available in India way after they stop selling them elsewhere. The iPhone 4s is still available here today, and those who don't understand the fact that it is over 4 years old (or don't care) buy it just for the apple logo on the back.
Resale value. Used iPhones sell like hot cakes with much less devaluation than other brands. So many simply buy the latest ones, then sell them six months or a year later and move on.
This is my take on the situation and might be completely wrong, of course. Just my two cents.

Hi Tom,

On top of their recent security issue, Nissan just informed me that my 2014 LEAF will no longer have wireless access over AT&T 2G EDGE network after 12/31/2016. The letter talks about covering a “substantial portion” of parts and installation of a new Telematics Control Unit (TCU), but is vague about the timing, details, and costs.

I’m currently unable to access my car remotely due to the fact that Nissan did a poor job of designing their network security. Now, I find that I purchased a car in 2014 that is using a network that has had a near end-of-life date that Nissan has known about since 2012.

The 2G EDGE network shutdown is going to cause widespread issues for embedded systems. This is a future challenge for IoT where durable goods have a much longer lifespan than consumer products. Will your WIFI fridge still work in 20 years?

Here is an AT&T EOL report from 2012.

Hey Tom,
After listening to your discussion about the Amazon Echo today, I started wondering if something like it could be achieved with a Raspberry Pi. Sure enough, someone has already done it, and there's even a few tutorials on how to set it up!

Later,
