Trend Micro researchers uncovered two vulnerabilities in Apple’s QuickTime for Windows that are not yet in the wild. Exploitation would require users to download a malicious video and view it. Apple has not updated Quicktime for Windows since January. The researchers do not believe Apple will issue any more patches and advise removing the program, a recommendation seconded by the US Department of Homeland Security. Apple has not supported Quicktime for Windows 8 or 10.

Microsoft launched a preview of plugin-free Skype in the Edge browser. It supports voice and video calls including group sessions. The new version uses the Object Real-Time Communications (ORTC) API. It won’t work if you’re calling an older version of Skype, mobile apps, non-Edge browsers or landlines. The preview is rolling out slowly and should be complete by the end of the month. Microsoft is waiting for H.264 video support in Chrome and Firefox before expanding to those browsers.

A page on Apple’s website detailing the company’s environmental initiatives contains a sentence that reads “Years of use, which are based on first owners, are assumed to be four years for MacOS and tvOS devices and three years for iOS and watchOS devices.” The page has since been updated, replacing MacOS with OS X. Ars Technica notes that Brazilian enthusiast site MacMagazine uncovered another reference to “MacOS” buried in OS X 10.11.4 a few weeks ago.

Pick of the Day

Hi Tom,

With the recent announcement of from Microsoft, that Windows 10 is going to be getting a bash terminal upgrade in the near future, I wanted to recommend my favorite terminal tool for Windows in the mean time. MobaXterm! I know the old stand by is PuTTY, but I wanted to mention Moba since it is packed full of features! RDP, VNC, of course SSH and SFTP, just to name a few. There is a home and pro versions, but the home doesn't seem to be very limited compared to the pro. Also worth mentioning that there is a portable version, which makes it an even stronger contender as a PuTTY substitute.

Thanks

When I was a 'tween in the early 60s Mom used to drop my brother, sister and me off at the movies for a Saturday Kiddie Matinee. 50 cents bought an afternoon of cartoons and short subjects (I remember old Buck Rogers and Flash Gordon serials) where kids could be kids, within reason. There were a few ushers to maintain order, but that was it.

The house lights stayed on at a low level and there was no problem moving around, going out to the lobby, hanging out with friends, etc. Lots of fun. So "specialized theater experiences" have been around for quite a while. 😀

Of course these days no theater would dare allow unsupervised minors to take over a theater. But it was fun while it lasted.

Regarding movies theaters that serve food: The occasional flash of light from someone's phone is significantly less distracting to me than these theaters, all of which don't turn the lights down nearly as low as they used to, and have wait staff wandering around the entire time. Even in the middle of the film when the activity has lessened, nothing short of someone talking on their phone is as distracting and as frustrating as people wandering around in front of me with racks of drinks, etc. I'm kind of baffled how the older generation finds this less distracting than someone popping out their phone once in a while, responding to a text and putting it away.

I volunteer at an Art House Theatre in Portland, OR and at least once a month we have Hecklevision. They show a movie and just before there's information on how to text commentary which shows up on the screen below the movie.

I'm one of those phone-addicted millennial a the AMC CEO mentioned. I have to agree that allowing phone use in movie theaters sounds like utter hell.

I've noticed that the most frequent phone users in movie theaters are actually outside the 18-24 age bracket, I've even witnessed a parent in a kids movie stream a baseball game with the brightness turned down throughout the entire movie. Yet somehow my friends and I are able to resist the urge to pop out a tweet for the 1.5-2 hours of a movie.
