Captcha Phrase or Foreign Celebrity
Captcha Phrase or Foreign Celebrity is a game invented by Patrick Delahanty and first played on the Robert's Victory Juice episode of NSFW. It was inspired by a tweet or two by writer and tech journalist Peter Cohen.
Setup
To play the game, someone must take screenshots of captcha phrases that look similar to real names. (ReCaptcha is particularly good at this.) The screenshots are to provide proof that it was a captcha phrase and also provide a good payoff.
An equal amount of foreign celebrity names are also needed. To help with the payoff, it's only recommended to use people with a photo available. The more quirky the name, the better. Multiple consonants in a row is usually good.
Playing
To play, each of the participants is presented with a two-word phrase. They have to decide if it is a captcha phrase or the name of a foreign celebrity. They may either all verbally take turns announcing their bets or (particularly in the case of a tie breaker), they can write down the two options on signs and all hold them up at the same time.
If a person guesses correctly, they get a point.
If they correctly guess the nationality and gender of a person, they do not get bonus points except in tie-breaking rounds.
Fun Facts
- Patrick created the first game just a few hours before showtime, so the site used to present the options and answers wasn't anything too fancy. No database or anything...just static HTML pages.
- Justin had only asked for five. It's a good thing Patrick is an overachiever since they blew through more than half of the 16 options presented.
