EA might have spilled the beans on life time sales of Xbox Ones. Ars Technica reports CFO Blake Jorgensen said the combined install base of Xbox One and PS4s hit 55 million units during an EA earnings call. Sony has previously announced it sold 35.9 million PS4s which gives 19 million units for the Xbox One. Microsoft stopped reporting console sales in Oct 2015. Jorgensen added both consoles were out performing their predecessors at the same point in their lifecycle and had “exceeded virtually everyone's forecast for the (2015) year”.
According to Bloomberg, “people familiar with the plans” say Apple is developing a new wireless charging technology with Asian partners for release sometime in 2017. The tech would charge devices at a distance unlike current wireless charging technology that require close proximity. Apple took out a patent in 2010 for using near-field magnetic resonance to wireless charge devices up to 1 meter from an iMac.
The Financial Times reported Friday that Apple has acquired augmented reality company Flyby Media which has worked closely with Google on tech that allows mobile devices to see the world around it. Flyby was the vision-based software partner for Google's Project Tango. Apple purchased German AR firm Metaio in May last year and motion-sensing firm PrimeSense, which worked on the Kinect, in 2013.
Facebook posted on Thursday it will close its Parse mobile application development backend service. Users have a until January 28, 2017 to transition. 600,000 apps are estimated to have been built on the platform. Facebook is providing a migration tool to move to any MongoDB database. Slashdot Media which owns Sourceforge and Slashdot has been sold to San Diego and Petaluma-based web publisher BIZX. Fossforce.com reports credible sources tell it that Slashdot has now had layoffs with many longtime employees leaving.

The Charlotte Observer reports Bank of America said Wednesday it will allow customers to use their phones to make ATM transactions by the end of this year. The bank will test the service with employees starting in February in Charlotte, New York, Boston and the San Francisco Bay Area. JPMorgan Chase and Wells Fargo have also announced plans for similar technology. BMO Harris implemented 900 some such ATMS in the US starting last March. Cardless ATMS have been used in Spain since 2011.
Sony raised operating profit was up 11% year over year to ¥202.1 billion ($1.69 billion) thanks to a 10.5% rise in video game revenue and cost-cutting in its mobile unit. Sony Pictures also saw revenue rise 26.9%. But its devices business which makes image sensors and batteries was down 12.6%, a result of slower high-end smartphone sales. Sony is budgeting for a fall in demand for sensors for high-end smartphones in 2016.
As we mentioned yesterday, Amazon had its best quarterly profit ever but missed expectations. The other big concern was shipping costs increased 24.4% year over year. Amazon Chief Financial Officer Brian Olsavsky said carriers can’t handle all the capacity Amazon needs. So will Amazon become a shipper? Olsavsky said "We've had to add more of our own logistics to supplement our partners, not to replace them."
This is a story I probably wouldn’t do if my wife didn’t work with YouTube and particularly work closely with the Fine Brothers. But since it’s got some votes on our subreddit and I could be seen as biased if I ignored it I thought I’d at least present it. Mashable reports that the Fine Brothers who do the REACT channel, announced this week that they will license 11 of their show formats and trademarks for others to make. Users like Austin_Rivers on reddit said “The Fine Bros and YouTube are now attempting to copyright “reaction videos” (something that existed before they joined youtube). On Twitter thefinebros wrote “We're not saying we hold a copyright on reaction videos overall, no one can. We're licensing our specific shows, like TV has done for years.”

Hi Tom,

I loved that you brought up J.C.R Licklider on the podcast on Friday. His story is incredible and many listeners of your show would likely enjoy 'The Dream Machine: J.C.R. Licklider and the Revolution That Made Computing Personal.'

Hi Tom,

Great, relevant discussion of Microsoft's software solution for the Iowa caucus. One question: who decided Microsoft would provide this solution? Each state party? The national parties? Some unpartisan election commission? Microsoft itself?

To Jenny's point: it is not unusual for one tech company unilaterally to provide a solution to a government project, but usually this is part of a lengthy and public bidding process.

If this were happening in a country making the transition to democracy, the UN election observers would be involved. Maybe they would send Jimmy Carter to Iowa to investigate.

No one has said this thus far but i think the first real usage of the Beats premium brand for Apple will be to launch their VR Product.

Beats is already a premium priced audio product. By adding VR screens they can introduce a product that can be hip headphones when not in use. (see: Glyph: https://www.avegant.com/buy-now/ - now imagine with a beats "B" and Apple logo)

I then suspect the launch will have two or three models at the $500-800 range and have VR app built into all devices (think a modern QuickTimeVR). The BeatsVR (or AppleVR) set will connect with latest bluetooth and work on all current iOS/Mac OS devices.

Love the show,

With all the drone regulation talk I saw a blog post that writes about what the laws in Estonia are. Now I can't really send it raw because it's written in a language only ~1,3 million people / about 3 dtns listeners can understand, so I translated the full post: (edited for relevancy). Full translation of the post and links are in the DTNS show notes.
