Physics scam creates IMPOSSIBLE result!

Revision3 Summary

Setting Up the Matchstick Science Prank

Fill an empty beer bottle all the way to the top with water, then grab 3 wooden matches and break off the heads. (make sure to break them off as close to the actual match head as possible). Next, announce that you're going to place all three match heads in the bottle and cover it up with your thumb... the question is: do they think the match heads will *sink* or *float*?

Revealing the Matchstick Science Prank

Amazingly, you cause one match head to sink, one to float, and one to stay suspended in the center!

When you break off the match heads, you're actually creating miniature "Cartesian divers": little vessels with air trapped in them. As the pressure increases, the air compresses and makes them heavier than the water. Once you've dropped the match heads in the bottle, use your thumb to cover the top and press down into the bottle. This will increase the pressure and allow you to imperceptibly control the height of the match heads inside the bottle!
