The Spill Crew in Animated Form

Spill.com is an award-winning movie review, discussion, and news website created by cartoonist and animator Korey Coleman. It is the continuation of the 9 year old Austin, Texas based cable-access show called The Reel Deal. There are five main film reviewer contributors to the website, collectively known as the Spill Crew, including Korey Coleman, Chris Cox aka Cyrus, Martin Thomas aka Leon, Robert Cargill aka Carlyle or Massawyrm of Ain't It Cool News, and Tony Guerrero aka The Co-Host 3000. With the exception of Coleman, they use aliases due to legal issues. They review movies as animated versions of themselves or in uncut audio reviews, maintaining their persona in weekly podcasts.

Brian Brushwood is close friends with all of the spill crew. Korey, Leon, and Jason of the LEOG podcast have appeared on NSFW.

Review System

  • Better Than Sex: The Spill Crew usually gives this rating to a movie that they believe is absolutely outstanding and has little to no flaws in it. This is the least given rating.
  • Full Price: The Crew gives this rating to a movie they view as very entertaining and well made, and definitely worth paying the full price at a theater to see. It is not perfect, but it is definitely excellent.
  • Matinée: These kinds of movies are usually movies that had some good things, but some bad things kept it from being amazing. This rating says to pay matinée prices to see at a theater.
  • Rental: These films are only worth renting because of certain good things that are worth seeing, but are not worth paying at a theater to see due to bad things that overcome anything good.
  • Some Ole' Bullshit: These films are truly terrible films. They are not the worst things ever made, but they are definitely awful and should not be seen by anyone.
  • F**k You: These are some of the worst films ever made. These films do everything wrong and do it worse than bad. This rating wasn't part of the original system, but Korey and Co-Host added it during their review of Disaster Movie. It, like the Better Than Sex rating, is the least given out.

At the end of each review, the critics give their ratings, which are combined (off screen) into an overall rating. The Spill reviewers often specify their ratings during the review, e.g. "low rental" or "high matinée."

Podcasts

In addition to movie review and discussion, the website also releases three weekly podcasts.

  • A Couple of Cold Ones is a podcast featuring Korey and Carlyle, focusing mainly on film. Segments include discussion on weekly box office rankings dubbed "The Top Five," followed by free form discussion and a segment on e-mails submitted by members of the site.
  • The League of Extremely Ordinary Gentlemen (LEOG) is a podcast started by Cyrus and Leon. It has an ensemble cast, lead by Cyrus and Leon, featuring their friends: Beau, Jason Murphy, Grant, Greg, Jason F, Randy, Harris, Kristin, Allison, Kayla, and Merry. A wide range of topics on geek culture are discussed, such as comic books, science fiction & fantasy, movies and TV shows. The podcast's name is derived from Alan Moore's The League of Extraordinary Gentlemen.
  • Let’s Do This!, features Korey and Co-Host, with occasional guest members. It is the most popular podcast on the site and a spinoff of A Couple of Cold Ones. The show does not have a fixed topic, although film, Internet videos, and personal anecdotes, and music are common subjects. The show is defined by its stream of consciousness style and the hosts' exaggerated mannerisms. The podcast has numerous running gags and recurring elements including the show's mascot, Goatsey. An imaginary bipedal goat, Goatsey helps lead to the intro of the crew shouting the show name and playing death metal. The latter part of the show includes "Fuck Yo Thoughts", the show's e-mail section.
  • Spill Call-in Show - This is a new semi regular podcast were Korey takes call from fans and answers there questions. This show is usually recorded live and then posted later in the week as podcast for those that missed the live broadcast.

Recurring Jokes

The podcasts and reviews of The Spill Crew are largely humorous. Since they are good friends, they like to take shots at each other. Some of the commonly recurring jokes are:

  • Korey's womanizing, especially with white women and older women.
  • Korey explaining what a black man would do in a given situation from the movie (for instance, claiming that all the black people would have already left the city in Cloverfield or immediately leaving the house in Paranormal Activity).
  • Leon's tendency to spoil the endings of movies.
  • Cyrus and Leon's comic-book fandom.
  • Leon's old age
  • Korey's tendency to go easy on films he dislikes.
  • Co-Host's repeated catch phrase "Don't tell me your problems!"
  • Carlyle's self-aggrandizing and/or name dropping.
  • Korey's temper.
  • Carlyle's passionate disliking of Bratz: The Movie and Daddy Day Camp.
  • Co-Host relating everything to porn.
  • Korey referring to his roommate as "Taco Bell Lugosi", because he always goes out at night to go get Taco Bell.
