Amazon announced the Amazon Echo will be available for preorder in the next couple days for £149.99 in the UK and 179.99 Euro in Germany and £50 / 50 Euro less for Prime customers. In addition there's now a white version of the Echo that will also arrive in the US. All of this ships in the autumn. Amazon also has a new version of the Echo Dot that ships in the US and UK October 20 and Germany October 26th. It's $50 £50 or €60. You can get discounts if you buy packs of 6 or 12. Tim Cook told the US TV program Good Morning America that he thinks Augmented Reality is bigger than Virtual Reality. Cook said AR "gives the capability for both of us to sit and be very present talking to each other, but also have other things visually for both of us to see." Cook added, "Virtual reality sort of encloses and immerses the person into an experience that can be really cool but probably has a lower commercial interest over time."
Traditional desktop Windows apps, the vernable old Win32 API type, can now be obtained in the Windows 10 store. Previously only apps that worked with the Universal Windows Platform, the ones on the tiled interface, could be distributed int he store. Developers must repackage the apps using the Desktop App Converter. This removes some of the sandboxing requirement of Universal apps while still providing the clean install upgrade and uninstall features of store software. Devs can also add UWP functions to desktop apps. For instance, Evernote's new store version supports live tiles and notifications. Converted desktop apps will not run across mobile HoloLens, or Xbox though.

I was listening to you guys talk about project Fi and Tom said that the SIMs are only usable in the Nexus phone. It turns out that Fi allows customers to have multiple SIM cards and some can be for data only like in an iPad.

A friend of mine is a Fi customer and loaned me his iPad SIM for a trip I'm currently taking in Germany. I put the Fi SIM in my unlocked iPhone 6s, made a APN change and now I'm enjoying LTE all over Germany.

I have not tried to make any calls over it so I can't say if the voice side works (I'm using Google/skype) but SMS, Signal and messages don't seem to have any issues.

Love the show,

Hey Tom,

Just wanted to clarify something from your Project Fi discussion with Patrick: if you want to completely break it down, data is 1 cent per megabyte. I've spoken to people about this in the past and they don't understand the pricing; they only see the $10/GB and assume that going into the next gigabyte will cost an additional $10, instead of an additional 1¢/MB used.

Thanks for the review of your coverage in Japan and Korea; I am planning a trip to Japan next year and I'm glad to hear Fi works well!

I was in ROK July 14-21 and used a Nexus 6p and was near Dongdaemun History and Culture Park, Jongno 3ga (brown and blue line). And downtown train station and I had good service. I also had good service in Taiwan.

I write this from my honeymoon, I had mixed results in Argentina, with service predictably dropping to 2G away from Buenos Aires and only sporadic LTE service in the city. I also got the welcome to Brazil message when near the border!

Dear Tom,

Getting a replacement Note 7 is problematic. Both AT&T and Sprint currently do not have replacement Notes. Instead AT&T is offering a Galaxy Edge (a step down from the Note 7) and a $35.00 store credit when you try to exchange a Note 7, at least here in the San Antonio area. Sprint is doing something similar. I know this because a member of my family owns a Note 7 plus he works as a security guard in a shopping centre and has had to escort angry customers from both the AT&T store and the Sprint store due to their replacement policies. So now he's going to have to deal with nerfed charging because of limited supplies of the Note 7.

Can anyone say "removable batteries would have solved this problem!"?

Seriously! Are we so concerned over" thinness" and lighter weight phones that a reasonably simple problem like this could have been solved much easier if we could put up with an ounce of weight and a 1/16th inch of thickness more in our phones?

Hopefully Samsung will get replacement Notes out to retailers quickly.

Thanks for your great podcast.

Sincerely,
